On Saturday, Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, dismissed Health Minister Andrew Gwynne following WhatsApp messages that the minister admitted were poorly judged.
A government spokesperson emphasized Starmer’s commitment to maintaining high standards for those in public office, stating that he would not hesitate to take action against any minister who fails to meet those standards.
In a post on X, Gwynne expressed his apologies for any offense caused by his “poorly judged” comments. He added that he understood the Prime Minister’s and Labour’s decision. While deeply saddened by his suspension, he pledged to offer support in any way possible.
A Labour spokesperson confirmed that the 50-year-old Gwynne had been temporarily suspended from the party as an investigation into his WhatsApp comments is underway, in line with Labour’s rules and procedures.
“Swift action will be taken if individuals are found to have breached the high standards expected of them as Labour Party members,” the spokesperson added.
In messages obtained by the Mail on Sunday, Gwynne reportedly expressed a wish for a 72-year-old woman to soon pass away after she had written to her local councillor about bin collections. He also allegedly made sexist comments about Angela Rayner and racist remarks about Labour MP Diane Abbott.
