British police arrest wanted octogenarian after 27 years on the run

After 27 years on the run, the British Police announced on Tuesday that they had arrested an 80-year-old man at an airport.

Richard Burrows, who is accused of historic sexual abuse of children, was detained at Heathrow on Thursday after arriving in the UK from Thailand, according to the Cheshire Police.

According to the police, he has been wanted since December 1997, when he failed to show up for trial on two counts of buggery and eleven counts of indecent assault at Chester Crown Court.

The charges concern alleged abuse that allegedly occurred at children’s homes in Congleton, Cheshire, and the West Midlands between 1969 and 1971.

“Our determination to locate Burrows has not faltered over the past 27 years, and his arrest marks a significant step forward in this case and the beginning of closure for all those involved,” Cheshire Police Detective Eleanor Atkinson stated.

“I would like to thank the public for the information they have provided over the years during our search for Burrows, and I hope that his arrest provides some reassurance.

“I also hope that his arrest acts as a warning to any other wanted suspects – demonstrating that no matter how long you hide, we will find you, and you will be arrested.”

Since his disappearance, several searches for Burrows have been conducted, including a 1998 Crimewatch appeal.

Duncan Burrage, the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) international liaison officer in Thailand, stated: “Utilizing our international network and working closely with Cheshire Police colleagues, we have been able to track down a fugitive wanted in connection to extremely serious allegations.”

According to a police spokesman, Burrows has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Chester Crown Court.
