The Super Eagles have been encouraged to honour the match against Libya by Patrice Motsepe, head of the Confederation of African Football.

After being stuck at the Al Abaq Airport for over 15 hours, the Nigerian contingent has left for home.

A rematch between Libya and Nigeria is planned for Tuesday, October 15.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s goal in the 86th minute gave the Super Eagles a 1-0 victory at the Godwill Akpabio International Stadium in the first leg.

Libyan players bemoaned their bad travel arrangements as they travelled from Port Harcourt to Uyo via road prior to the match.

The flight carrying the Nigerian team to Libya for the rematch was rerouted to Al Abaq, where they were abandoned.

As the players threatened a boycott, team captain William Troost-Ekong resorted to social media to call for action.

CAF boss Patrice Motsepe thinks Nigeria can honour the game, despite the Super Eagles’ eventual clearance to depart the nation, according to Punch.

Motsepe wants the Eagles to play Tuesday’s game, according to Nigerian Sports Minister Owan Enoh, who also revealed the CAF president’s stance on the matter.

Oluwashina Okeleji on X quoted Enoh as saying: “CAF boss Motsepe wants Nigeria to play on Tuesday. I’ve instead informed CAF that the concern of the government and people of Nigeria is the safety of the team and their safe return, urging that CAF should focus on working with us to achieve this.”

After the Nigerian contingents arrived on Sunday night, local authorities neglected them for over fifteen hours.

Before the game, the team’s medics expressed concerns about the players’ health after they were spotted dozing off on the bench.
