The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, engaged in a thought-provoking conversation with Nobel Prize-winning economist Dr James Robinson on Friday. The discussion, which focused on Nigeria’s monetary policy direction, highlighted the CBN’s commitment to transparency, consistency, and restoring public confidence.
“We inherited a crisis of confidence, but we chose a different path. We’re not turning back,” Cardoso declared, drawing applause from an audience of economic stakeholders, policymakers, and financial experts.
The event, opened by Tal Cohen, President of Nasdaq, featured a strong representation of Nigerian professionals and global financial leaders. Dr Nkiru Balonwu, CBN’s Adviser on Stakeholder Engagement, anchored the discussion, while Temi Popoola, Group CEO of the Nigerian Exchange Group, moderated the Question and Answer session
Dr Olubukola Akinniyi Akinwunmi, Director of the CBN’s Banking Supervision Department, provided closing remarks. The CBN Board and Monetary Policy Committee members, including Mr Robert Agbede, Prof. Melvin Ayogu, and Dr Aloysius Ordu, were also in attendance, underscoring the apex bank’s growing engagement with Nigerian professionals abroad.
The discussion emphasized the CBN’s global reach and strategic collaboration with the Nigerian diaspora, as well as its commitment to leveraging homegrown talent to drive economic transformation
