Ceasefire: Zelenskyy heads to Saudi Arabia ahead of US talks

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine visited Saudi Arabia on Monday to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, ahead of crucial discussions between Ukrainian and U.S. officials aimed at finding a way to end the ongoing war with Russia, a conflict that has reached a critical juncture for Kyiv.

The United States, Ukraine’s key ally in the conflict, has shifted its approach, pushing for a swift end to the fighting by directly engaging with Moscow and scaling back military support and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

Zelenskyy is set to meet with the Saudi Crown Prince, whose nation has taken on a mediating role since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Saudi Arabia has facilitated prisoner exchanges and hosted talks between Russia and the United States last month.

The upcoming talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials, scheduled for Tuesday, are the first official meeting following a contentious Oval Office encounter between Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump. These discussions are expected to focus on a bilateral minerals deal and efforts to bring the war to a close.

Under significant pressure from Trump, who has called for a rapid end to the conflict, Zelenskyy has worked to align with the U.S. president, despite Ukraine’s failure to secure the security guarantees it considers essential for any potential peace agreement.

Zelenskyy announced that he would not attend Tuesday’s meeting but that his delegation would include his chief of staff, foreign and defense ministers, and a senior military official from the presidential administration.

“On our side, we are fully committed to constructive dialogue, and we hope to discuss and agree on the necessary decisions and steps,” Zelenskiy said in a post on X.
