Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle offered his thoughts on why Senegal secured a 1-0 win over Nigeria in their opening Group D match at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Tuesday evening.
A second-half goal by Christian Gomis handed Senegal the victory at the Amani Stadium in Tanzania.
In his post-match press conference, Chelle emphasized that the Senegalese team outperformed his home-based Super Eagles players due to their higher level of aggression during the game.
He noted that Senegal displayed more intensity throughout the match and, in his view, fully deserved the win.
“Senegal was more aggressive than us. They put more intensity than us, and for me, this is normal. They deserve this victory,” Chelle said.
Chelle also admitted that his team made a mistake in the second half against Senegal.
“In the second half, we gave the goal. This was a small mistake. But this is normal because we never got into this game. Maybe mentally, or maybe we were scared about something,” he added.
Nigeria will now face Sudan in their second CHAN game next Tuesday.
