In response to recent comments made by Professor Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), human rights advocate and lawyer Chidi Odinkalu said he had no idea why the Southeast region was staying silent about the country’s current economic crisis.
Odinkalu claims that Professor Yusuf isn’t paying attention to what he said.
Professor Yusuf recently stated in an interview with Arise TV that the Southeast has been silent about the hardships facing the nation, and he encouraged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to investigate the cause of the silence.
The former head of the NHIS acknowledged that silence exists in the North but stated that it is more lethal there than anywhere else in the nation.
Nigerians are suffering, according to Professor Yusuf, who urged President Tinubu to feed the populace before things got out of control.
He said, “I honestly don’t know why the Southeast is uncharacteristically quiet. But the President needs to find out. The North is where I know I live; even my heritage is. The silence in the North is more lethal than anywhere else in the country. And the President needs to listen to that.
“The silence in the North, from the people of the North in spite of the suffering people are going through, is more lethal than people coming out.”
Professor Yusuf made his speech after the demonstrations against the nation’s economic suffering that started in several areas of the North and South-West.
“My friend, Prof Usman Yusuf, is asking why South-East Nigeria is not up in a cacophony of postulations over economic hardship in Nigeria, Surely he is not a serious fellow, is he?” Chidi Odinkalu stated in response to Professor Yusuf’s statement.

The sacked PDP Rivers State Chairman, Chukwuemeka Aaron, had filed the motion on behalf of those purportedly elected as state executives. Also included were Oye Fubara Igenewari, representing those elected as local government executives, and ThankGod Beke, representing ward executives As interested parties, they asked the court for permission to appeal the ruling that removed them from office. The PDP's state, local, and ward executives, led by Aaron, were fired by the same court on January 13, 2025, under the presidence of Justice Jumbo, after the congresses that elected them were deemed invalid.
