The Chinese government has cautioned its nationals in Nigeria against engaging in illegal business activities, particularly mining, warning that those found wanting would face consequences. Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, issued the warning during a courtesy call to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, in Abeokuta.
Abiodun had expressed concerns over the activities of Chinese nationals who were allegedly colluding with locals to carry out illegal mining in the state. In response, Dunhai assured that the Chinese government would take decisive action against any of its citizens found engaging in illicit activities in Nigeria
“We urge our nationals to comply with Nigerian laws and regulations and shun illicit activities,” Dunhai said, emphasizing the importance of respecting local laws and regulations.
Meanwhile, Nigerian scholars and policymakers are calling for deeper academic and cultural exchanges with China, shifting away from Western-dominated narratives to a knowledge-based partnership that serves Africa’s development interests. At a lecture on “Advancing Knowledge Exchange”, Prof. Efem Ubi, Director of Studies at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, emphasised that China has become central to Africa’s development discourse.
Ubi’s comments highlight the growing importance of Africa-China relations, with many experts believing that stronger academic and cultural ties could drive development and growth on the continent
