The 1970–74/76 set of the Igbobi College Old Boys’ Association returned to their alma mater in Yaba, Lagos, on Thursday, turning their 55th anniversary into a moment of reflection, thanksgiving, and service.

The celebrations opened at the Rev. Canon Reginald Parker Memorial Chapel with a thanksgiving service anchored on the theme “Looking back with gratitude, moving forward with faith.” Pastor Nwachukwu Nzegwu, one of the alumni, delivered the exhortation, urging his peers to see their journey as evidence of divine grace.

“Fifty-five years ago, we were admitted into this school. We walked on this same ground and sang in this same chapel. But for as many of us who started this journey, some have gone to be with the Lord,” he reminded the gathering. He encouraged the group to remain thankful for the gift of reunion while challenging students to anchor their lives on faith. “True success comes when you trust the Lord with your ways. It goes beyond academics or connections,” he told them.

The highlight of the day came after the service when the old boys handed over new facilities to the college hostel. The donation included 40 custom-built bunk beds with storage cabinets and five additional single beds, enough to serve 85 students

Dr. Adewunmi Bero, chairman of the set, explained that the gesture was a way of giving back to the institution that shaped them. “This year marks 55 years since we entered Form One in this great institution. To celebrate, we decided to focus on the welfare and comfort of the students,” he said.

He added that the project was funded by contributions from members both within and outside Nigeria. “We are delighted to present 40 bunk beds with cabinets and five extra single beds for 85 students. Our members in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and North America all came together to make this possible. It gives us joy to support the college in this way, and we hope to do even more in the future,” Bero noted.

For the alumni, the anniversary was not just a time to reminisce but also an opportunity to inspire current students and demonstrate that true gratitude is best expressed through service.
