The pioneer Chief Executive of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Colonel Ahmadu Ali (Rtd), has affirmed that the Scheme is here to stay.

Ali made this statement during a meeting with the current Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, who visited him at his residence in Abuja.

Ahmadu Ali emphasized that the NYSC has earned its place through its various programs, services, and its positive impact nationwide, further solidifying its continued relevance over the past five decades.

Colonel Ali, who was the National Director (now referred to as Director-General) of the NYSC, commended General Yakubu Gowon for his visionary leadership, which led to the creation of the NYSC in 1973, underscoring that it is a lasting program with ongoing significance.

The first Chief Executive of the NYSC noted that the Scheme plays a vital role in fostering national unity. He stated, “People have the opportunity to travel to other states that they ordinarily would not have visited.”

He reiterated that the NYSC equips young Nigerians with essential coping skills, allowing them to grow outside of their comfort zones, thus improving their tolerance for one another.

Colonel Ali also praised the administrators of the Scheme for their efforts in preserving the vision of the founding fathers.

He expressed pride in the NYSC, observing that the initial doubts and protests from Nigerian graduates against the Scheme’s establishment have now transformed into anticipation and enthusiasm. He pledged to continue praying for its ongoing sustainability.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, explained that the purpose of his visit was to pay his respects to Ali as the founding Chief Executive of the NYSC, acknowledging the strong foundation Ali laid at its inception, which continues to ensure the Scheme’s stability over 50 years later.
