In order to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Nigerian comedian and politician Obinna Simon, better known by his stage as MC Tagwaye, has formally quit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tagwaye said his decision to defect came after “months of intense consultations and introspection” in a Facebook announcement.

Citing problems like a gerontocratic leadership style, policies that have made economic hardship worse, and a lack of rewards for devoted members, he attacked the APC for departing from its core values.

Additionally, he charged that the party is undermining internal democracy by allowing a select group of powerful individuals to control its course while excluding the majority.

“In contrast, the SDP stands for youth inclusion, transparency, and accountability,” he said, adding that the party’s vision for a better Nigeria aligns with his own.

Tagwaye urged people who agree with him to work with him to create “a brighter future for Nigeria.”
