Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has been warned by Lagos State’s All Progressives Congress, or APC, against his “habitual knee-jerk reactions” to national crises and is being urged to take a more positive stance in opposition politics.
Mogaji Seye Oladejo, the party’s spokeswoman, made the announcement in response to Obi’s recent remarks casting doubt on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s private vacation and its alleged connection to the nation’s security issues.
Nigeria should have a competent and legitimate opposition, not what Oladejo called “a professional complainer-in-chief.” He pointed out that Obi’s constant criticism of the president is more a sign of political desperation than true patriotism.
“Must Peter Obi comment on everything?” he asked. “Nigerians are not deceived. His constant moralising of the President’s every move is less about patriotism and more about seeking cheap relevance. By attempting to paint himself as the nation’s conscience, he trivialises governance and reduces complex issues to social media talking points.”
Despite taking a little vacation, the APC spokesperson insisted that President Tinubu is still in complete charge of state affairs, emphasizing that contemporary governance enables presidents to stay in constant communication and full briefing with their security and intelligence staff.
“Mr Obi knows this, but he prefers posturing over pragmatism. Leadership also requires knowing when to speak, how to speak, and when silence is the better choice. Unfortunately, Obi appears to believe that his political relevance depends on reacting to every government action or inaction, regardless of context or consequence.”
He cautioned that continual agitation and reactionary statements run the risk of harming Obi’s reputation as a statesman and urged his assistants to be more mindful of their principal’s interactions with the public.
Oladejo criticized Obi for providing “nothing beyond soundbites, sermons, and perpetual complaints,” without providing specific policy solutions, while highlighting that the APC-led administration is concentrated on national security, economic recovery, and reestablishing trust in public institutions.
“Peter Obi’s comments amount to noise, not leadership or patriotism,” he said. “If he has meaningful contributions to make, let him present them responsibly. Otherwise, silence is an honourable option. For us in the APC, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our focus remains on governance, not political theatre.”
