In Imo State, 83 disgruntled members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have filed lawsuits against Austin Nwachukwu, the party’s state chairman, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other parties over the state congress’s alleged illegality and exclusion.
The irate members are attempting to remove Nwachukwu and other party leaders from office in a lawsuit submitted to the Federal High Court in Owerri.
By allegedly excluding duly elected delegates from Ideato North and South local government areas during the state congress of August 31, 2024, which produced Nwachukwu and other state executive members, the plaintiffs, led by Lambert Eze, accuse the party of violating both its own constitution and the Electoral Act, 2022. However, the plaintiffs maintain that the action was “unlawful, null, and void.”
The PDP national body and eleven other people, including Hon. Chris Ozoemenam and Hon. Dr. Sylvester Durukwuaku, the party’s interim leaders in the Ideato North and Ideato South local government areas, have also joined the lawsuit.
The plaintiffs are requesting that the court declare the congress void, prevent the incumbent authorities from posing as executives, and mandate a new, democratic congress that is attended by all eligible delegates.
K.U. Alisigwe of Ononaku Chambers, Owerri, served as their attorney and filed the case, which was designated FHC/OW/CS/51/2025.
