Following the coup that resulted in the takeover of the West African nation’s government, former President Goodluck Jonathan left Guinea-Bissau.
Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs verified that Jonathan and his delegation departed on a special flight and are safe.
“Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau. He left with a special flight with members of his delegation, including Ibm Chambas,” the spokesperson for the ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said.
Before the military declared its takeover, Jonathan, the chair of the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission, was in the nation observing the presidential and legislative elections last Sunday.
Three days after the parliamentary and presidential elections in the impoverished West African nation, military officials in Guinea-Bissau took “total control” of the country on Wednesday, halting its democratic process and sealing its borders.
The chief of the presidential military office, General Denis N’Canha, informed reporters early in the afternoon that a command “composed of all branches of the armed forces, was taking over the leadership of the country until further notice.”
Umaro Embalo, the current president who was favored to win the poll on Sunday, was arrested.
General Horta N’Tam, the army’s chief of staff, was named by the military on Thursday as the nation’s new leader for a year.
