Court convicts mother of 5 for forging late Abba Kyari’s signature

A mother of five named Mrs. Ramat Mercy Mba was found guilty by a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Gwagwalada, Abuja, of faking the signature of the late Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, Judge Ibrahim Mohammad ordered that the prisoner be placed under remand at the Suleja Correctional Centre and postponed the sentencing of the guilty party until Thursday, May 16, 2024.

In June 2022, Mba was charged with five counts of cheating, fraud, and forgery by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in violation of Section 13 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 200 and Sections 320 (b) and 366 of the Penal Code Cap 89 laws of Northern Nigeria.

One of the counts read: “THAT you RAMAT MERCY MBA (F) sometimes in the month of October, 2019 or thereabout at Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fraudulently induce one Mr. Ismail Adewole Oladipupo, an unsuspecting job seeker and collected the sum of Seven Hundred Thousand Naira only N700,000.00 from him which sum was paid into your private account under the guise of securing employment for him at the National Space Research and Development Agency. (NASDRA), AND you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320(b) and punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code Cap 89 Laws of Northern Nigeria.”

Throughout the trial, the convict deceitfully lured her victims under the pretense of getting them jobs with government organizations such as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), and the National Space Research Development Agency (NASRDA). ICPC’s prosecutor revealed this, Mr. Hamza Sani.

Additionally, the documentary evidence submitted demonstrated that the guilty party had forged former President Muhammad Buhari’s signature and a letterhead paper from the Office of the Chief of Staff.

The letter, which was written to the ICPC Chairman, asked that the Commission hire three new members.

Nonetheless, the late Chief of Staff disassociated himself or his office from authorizing the letter in a written exchange that was also submitted as an exhibit in court.

In his ruling, Judge Ibrahim Muhammad found the mother of five guilty on counts 1, 2, 3, and 5, which pertain to forgery and cheating, but released her on count 4, which deals with felony.
