The Federal High Court in Kano has postponed the sentencing of well-known TikTok influencer Murja Ibrahimi Kunya to May 20, after the prosecution made a last-minute request to revise the charge against her.

Murja is facing a single count filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing her of misusing Nigerian currency.

The charge is related to a viral video that showed her spraying and dancing with N400,000 at a party held in December 2024 at the Tahir Guest Palace Hotel in Kano. She has already admitted guilt to the charge.

At Tuesday’s hearing, which was originally set for judgment and sentencing, EFCC lawyer Musa Isa unexpectedly asked for the charge to be amended.

This request was opposed by defense attorney Abubakar Saka, who argued that introducing a new charge at this point could delay the case and hinder the defendant’s right to a fair trial. He also stated that the defense team required sufficient time to review and understand the proposed amendment.

Justice Simon Amobeda, however, granted the prosecution’s request, stating that the amendment would be allowed in the interest of justice. As a result, the case has been adjourned to May 20 for further proceedings.

Until then, the judge ruled that Murja would remain in the custody of her legal team under the current bail conditions, which include an assurance that she will appear in court.
