A Magistrate Court in Kano has handed down a one-month jail sentence to five individuals for permitting their goats to roam freely and damage decorative plants maintained by the state government along Lodge Road and Race Course Road.

The group, with Usman Abdullahi identified as their leader, was taken to court by the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. They were charged under Section 7(e) of the 2019 Kano State Public Health Law, which forbids actions that create environmental disturbances or deface public infrastructure.

During the hearing, the prosecution led by Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu explained that a total of 17 goats belonging to the defendants were found feeding on government-managed landscaping.

These ornamental plants were planted as part of the state’s broader environmental efforts to beautify urban areas and tackle climate-related issues.

“These plants are not just for beautification, they are part of the state’s efforts to combat climate change and improve the quality of life for residents,” Barrister Aliyu told the court.

After reviewing the case, the magistrate ruled the defendants guilty and sentenced each to one month behind bars.

However, the court offered the option of paying a ₦25,000 fine in lieu of jail time. Additionally, the group was ordered to collectively pay ₦100,000 to compensate for the destruction of public greenery.

Following the judgment, the Ministry reiterated its stance on the proper management of animals, stating that stray livestock within city areas will not be tolerated.
