An Ondo State High Court in Okitipupa has issued a temporary injunction preventing Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other state authorities from recognizing or installing any traditional ruler in Alagbon Community, situated within the oil-producing Ugbo Kingdom in Ilaje Local Government Area.

The ruling, delivered on Friday by Justice Temitope Adedipe, directed all parties involved to maintain the existing state of affairs until the court reaches a decision on a pending legal challenge.

The injunction follows a wave of opposition from leaders in Alagbon after the Ondo State Executive Council, chaired by Governor Aiyedatiwa during its Wednesday meeting, approved the appointment of Prince Olusola Joseph Ajaka as the first Gbogunron of Idi-Ogba Alagbon.

Announcing the council’s decision, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, explained that the selection was made in accordance with established procedures and based on input from accredited traditional institutions.

However, community leaders, objecting to the move, took legal action to stop the process and revoke any steps already taken regarding the chieftaincy installation.

In Suit No. HOK/76/2022, filed by D.J. Ayenowo of Sola Ebiseni and Associates, the court granted an interim order restraining the Ondo State Government, relevant officials, and the Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Enitiolorunda Obateru Akinruntan, from proceeding further with the installation.

The plaintiffs, High Chief Isaiah Adewole Demehin—a former state Commissioner for Information and the Asogbon of Ugboland—and Chief Mallon Ogede, the Baale of Alagbon, are challenging the legality of the government’s decision.

The lawsuit also alleges that a state commissioner from the Gbogunron family influenced the appointment process in favor of his lineage.

The matter has been adjourned for the hearing of the motion for interlocutory injunction and the eventual resolution of the main case.
