C’River, Ebonyi go into strong alliance and agreement

The governments of Cross River and the neighboring Ebonyi states have agreed to embark on a regular sensitization campaign in their borderline communities to discourage any encroachment, which frequently results in bloodbaths and fatalities.

A five-point communiqué signed by the deputy governors of Ebonyi and Cross River states yesterday in the deputy governor’s office in Abakaliki included this agreement. Representatives from both states approved the communique.

While awaiting the National Boundary Commission’s (NBC) delineation of the boundaries, the two deputy governors stated that sensitization was the first step.

The communique indicates that to restore peace and guarantee that no more lives are lost and property is damaged in these communities, the deputy governors—who also serve as chairs of their state’s State Boundary Committees—must get in touch with the NBC and request that boundary delineation work be expedited.

A mechanism for deploying combined security teams to monitor the impacted areas has also been agreed upon.

The border corridors of Ndiagu Amagu, Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi, and Adadama, Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State have been the subject of protracted boundary disputes for many years.
