In Cross River State, the PDP has warned to take action against members who disparage party officials on social media.
Following a meeting with the party’s LG chairmen in Calabar on Friday, Chief Venatius Ikem, the state’s party chairman, issued the warning in a statement.
“We seriously frown at the high rate of cyberstalking by some members on party officials, characterized by opening of unauthorized social media platforms where abuses are wantonly committed. Offenders will be punished to serve as deterrent to others,” the statement said.
The Cross River PDP leadership has approved a verification process in an effort to purify the party in the state by identifying genuine party officials.
According to Ikem, the verification process will help the party become stronger and more cohesive by the 2027 election.
He praised the strong-willed members for their tenacity and refusal to be seduced, and he pointed out the ongoing pressure on PDP members to leave.
He states the inducement is a means of gaining political advantage by taking advantage of the poverty the ruling party has ingrained in the political system.
Ikem emphasized that the PDP is still Nigeria’s best chance for a better future and urged party members to be strong and devoted.
He dismissed the fact that certain party leaders had defected to the APC, claiming that it had no impact because the defectors were only looking for protection from their misdeeds.
He said that many people who have defected lack ideology and are unable to cite any advantages they have experienced as a result of their defections.
“Some defectors to the APC aren’t reaping any tangible benefits but rather seek to bask in the ruling party’s aura, while some unscrupulous officials are exploiting its membership as immunity from prosecution.
“In our assessment, these defections are largely driven by politicians who lack firm political ideologies and are highly motivated by venal interests,” the statement said.
According to the statement, numerous lawmakers and their supporters have returned to the PDP in spite of the state’s PDP defections to the APC.
“The defection from one party to another is not only peculiar to Cross River State but across the states of the federation as some highly placed elected officials like governors are defecting due to lack of political ideology,” the statement added.
