CWA to auction off Historic property to support vulnerable communities

A unique piece of Ipswich’s history has been listed for sale, with the heritage-listed former girls’ hostel owned by the Country Women’s Association (CWA) set to go under the hammer on March 1. The large CBD parcel includes a grand 12-bedroom Federation-style house and a brick building with four units, attracting wide interest from investors.

According to Harcourts Property Centre agents Mel Christie and Nathan O’Neill, all proceeds from the sale will fund services for women and children in need across regional Queensland.

“There has been a huge range of interest so far,” Ms Christie said. “You can’t knock that house down, which is excellent – I never want to see that happen.”

Ms Christie noted that while the main house is heritage-listed, the unit block, built in the 1970s, is not. She expects savvy investors to explore development opportunities, given the land’s high-density residential zoning.

“With the land zoned for high-density residential, you can build up to 45m,” Ms Christie said. “I expect investors will look to split the corner block for development.”

The 1,728 sqm site at 5 Brisbane Street offers a range of potential uses, including commercial possibilities such as a hotel, motel, leisure, or office facilities.

“The commercial possibilities are endless,” Ms Christie said. “Some have considered it as a future wedding venue, while others envisioned living in the main house and renting out the units.
