After Nasir El-Rufai defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Hajiya Maryam Suleiman, the Kaduna State Woman Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), distanced herself from him, claiming it was a “wrong political calculation.”
Maryam, a former ardent supporter of El-Rufai, abruptly changed her mind and vowed to stick with the APC, calling the SDP a political dead end. She apologized publicly and acknowledged that she had previously criticized Governor Uba Sani out of ignorance.
“Governor Uba Sani is a compassionate leader who genuinely uplifts people, unlike El-Rufai, whose policies on market demolitions and teacher dismissals hurt many,” she said.
She changed her name from Maryam Mai Rusau, who supported El-Rufai, to Maryam Mai Ginau, who supported Uba Sani’s developmental program. She also promised to apologize for her previous comments and reaffirm her loyalty to the APC.
As the APC looks to increase its power, this change represents a dramatic realignment in Kaduna politics.
