Defection: Labour Party loses another Rep to APC

On Thursday, Sunday Umahia, a member of the House of Representatives who was a member of the Labour Party (LP), defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Umehia, who represents the Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency in Enugu State, announced his intention to leave the Labour Party due to the protracted turmoil that has resulted in three groups vying for the party’s leadership.

According to the lawmaker’s letter of defection, which Speaker Abbas Tajudeen read aloud to the assembly, members are unsure of whom they should submit to because Senator Nenadi Usman, Barrister Julius Abure, and Alhaji Lamidi Apapa have all maintained their claims to the LP’s leadership.

According to the congressman, he has made the decision to join the APC and work with the president to lead the nation, and the South-East specifically.

However, Kingsley Chinda, the minority leader, claimed that the behavior in the house seems perplexing and that the frequent defection of lawmakers is making a mockery of democratic government in Nigeria.

He asserts that in order to protect Nigeria’s democracy, it is essential to reexamine and change the defection clause in the constitution.

Chinda requested that the Speaker declare the defectors’ seat empty in accordance with his constitutional authority.

The minority leader went on to say that since the Supreme Court has resolved the Labour Party’s leadership crisis, defection can no longer be attributed to it.

Additionally, he called the House’s attention to its standing order, particularly as it relates to the appointment of committee leaders, which stipulates that party affiliation is used.

According to him, individuals who have defected ought to be forced to resign from their committee leadership roles.
