The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has called on African armed forces to work together in building regional capabilities for cyber defence, intelligence exchange, and counterterrorism in response to the continent’s changing security landscape.

Speaking on Monday during the opening session of the first-ever African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit (ACDSS) in Abuja, Musa cautioned that threats such as terrorism, transnational crime, piracy, and climate-induced conflicts are becoming more complex. He also emphasized the growing influence of artificial intelligence and cyber warfare on modern combat scenarios.

“The threats confronting us are borderless, asymmetric, and digital. Africa must rise with equally dynamic responses built on unity, shared intelligence, and joint operations,” he said.

Musa emphasized that no nation can effectively manage these security challenges in isolation. He urged African defence institutions to move beyond mere dialogue and establish tangible collaborative mechanisms, including the creation of a locally driven defence manufacturing sector.

Referencing Nigeria’s ongoing efforts, he pointed to the country’s active participation in peacekeeping efforts, counterinsurgency campaigns, and humanitarian support, affirming Nigeria’s continued commitment to working alongside other African nations to enhance regional cooperation and operational effectiveness.

“The sacrifices of our fallen heroes must inspire us to build armed forces that are strong, accountable, and people-centred,” he added.
