Prominent PDP chieftain Dele Momodu has charged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is purposefully causing chaos within opposition parties in order to undermine them and move Nigeria closer to being a one-party state.

Momodu claimed in a Thursday interview with Arise News that the APC is using its hold on state authority to weaken important opposition parties including the PDP, Labour Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). He maintained that these strategies are intended to keep opposition parties from operating efficiently, strengthening the power of the ruling party.

Momodu did not hold back while pointing out the PDP’s internal problems, which he called the party’s “own worst enemy.” He claimed that unresolved disputes from the 2022 primary elections were largely to blame for the PDP’s current turmoil and charged that the APC was exploiting these internal disagreements to further undermine the party.

He voiced concern over the PDP’s declining status, noting out that some of the party’s losers from the 2022 primaries are still harbouring grudges and haven’t completely moved on from their setback. Momodu claims that because of this unresolved animosity, the party is now open to outside intervention.

“There are individuals who lost during the PDP primaries in 2022 who are still deeply resentful. Many have unofficially aligned with other parties, yet they remain connected to the PDP, whether out of love, hatred, or indecision,” he explained.

On the outside, Momodu charged that the APC intentionally utilised tactics to cause division among opposition groups. According to him, the ruling party is especially intent on weakening the combined strength of major opposition parties like the PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP by destabilising them.

“Nigeria is clearly heading in the direction of a one-party state,” Momodu stated. “The APC is so fearful of opposition that it is actively engineering crises across major opposition parties. It’s evident that this is a coordinated effort to destroy any meaningful resistance.”

Momodu also voiced concern over the hazy future of Nigeria’s democratic system, noting, “Everyone can see what’s happening, but how this situation will unfold is beyond prediction. For now, all we can do is observe and hope for a resolution.”

In his analysis of the PDP’s problems, Momodu linked the party’s internal strife to the aftermath of its 2022 presidential primary. He cited Atiku Abubakar’s victory over former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and the subsequent inability to choose Wike as Atiku’s running mate as a significant turning point in the party’s issues.

“The crisis began when former Governor Wike lost the presidential primary to Atiku Abubakar and was overlooked for the vice-presidential slot,” Momodu said. “Since then, Wike’s alignment has shifted. While he may not have physically left the PDP, it’s clear that his political loyalty now lies with the APC.”

He added: “However, he is yet to find the courage to physically join APC because he knows he would not be able to wield the kind of power he wielded in PDP. Right now, where his friends are holding sway, he is empowering them and encouraging them to keep PDP under the water.”
