Delta community set ablaze after killing of soldiers

Hours after the deaths of 16 soldiers on a peacekeeping operation, several homes in the sleepy and coastal Okuoma hamlet in Delta State’s Bomadi Local Government Area caught fire.

ZINGTIE reports that in a statement released on Saturday, the Director of Information at the Defence Headquarters, Tukur Gusau, said that twelve soldiers, two majors, a lieutenant colonel, and a captain had been killed on Thursday by young people.

“The troops of 181 Amphibious Battalion, Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, while on a peace mission to Okuoma community in BOMADI LGA of Delta State, were surrounded by some community youths and killed on Thursday, 14 March 2024,” Gusau said.

In the meantime, General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, had directed an investigation into the incident to begin immediately.

A video that Channels Television had uploaded showed black smoke rising from a few of the community’s buildings while distant flames flickered.

A few community members have also left because they worry military soldiers will harm them in retaliation.

In addition to denouncing the event, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori pledged to “fish out” the offenders.
