The Okpe Union (Worldwide), a global cultural body representing the Okpe ethnic group, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently assess the condition of the “Sapele Sea Port.” They described it as Nigeria’s only natural freshwater harbour, emphasizing its significant potential for driving growth in the country’s maritime industry.
This appeal was made during a press briefing organized by the National Executive Council of the Okpe Union (Worldwide), led by Prof. Igho Natufe, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Warri Correspondents’ Chapel.
Additionally, the Union requested that President Tinubu ensure the reopening of the “Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, Station at Amuokpe in Sapele Local Government Area,” which has been out of operation for several years. This closure, they said, has left communities in the Delta Central Senatorial District and neighboring areas without access to national television broadcasts.
The group further highlighted the critical state of the Benin-Sapele and Warri-Sapele Highways, describing both roads as being in a dire condition.
They pointed out that the deteriorating infrastructure has negatively impacted economic activity in the Okpe Kingdom and across Delta State, demanding immediate government intervention.
“We call on the Federal Government to expedite action in fixing the failed portions and propel the companies handling the contracts to accelerate the reconstruction projects,” Natufe said.
