Reports of a congress being conducted in Calabar have been denied by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, who said the national leadership rejected the idea and would schedule a fresh meeting.
Diri revealed this on Monday during the PDP, State Executive Council, and SEC meeting held at the party office in Yenagoa.
He stated: “Our party is thriving in Bayelsa State. We remain the party to beat. The PDP has never lost here. If you seek relevance, you should join the PDP.
“The PDP in Bayelsa is united and cannot be weakened. This party produced a Nigerian president from our state. It has also produced governors and federal legislators.
“This party is strong at the state level and will remain so. Let us ignore rumours. Some aim to divide us, but they will not succeed.”
He explained that there was no zonal congress in the South-South and that a new date would be decided at a suitable time by the national leadership after consulting with zonal leaders.
The governor promised that the Bayelsa PDP would continue to exist and be the greatest platform for politicians looking to fulfill their goals.
Diri reaffirmed that the PDP was still in control of Bayelsa politics and had produced important office holders, including a former president of Nigeria.
He underlined the necessity of teamwork to fortify the party in the state and advised members to remain together and steer clear of distractions.
Diri went on to say that the National Working Committee had postponed the South-South zonal congress, which had been originally planned for February 22.
He disclosed that the four South-South governors had requested the decision, letting the party’s leadership know that the timing was inappropriate.
In the meantime, Ogbia Local Government residents have expressed regret to the governor and the party for the conduct of George Turnah, the suspended zonal legal adviser.
Gabriel Ogbara, the representative for Ogbia Constituency 3, stated during the meeting that the apology was required since betrayal was not in the Ogbia people’s character.
Ogbara reiterated his allegiance to the party and its leadership while calling Turnah’s conduct regretful and requesting forgiveness.
Diri and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, were voted in favor of leadership by the State Executive Council.
Oforji Oboku, who represents the Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency, made the motion, and Monday Obolo, the leader of the State Assembly, seconded it.
Earlier, State PDP Chairman, Solomon Agwana, complimented Diri’s government, noting its numerous development projects across Bayelsa as evidence of good governance.
Agwana urged ongoing support for the administration to ensure future progress in the state and praised the governor for promoting unity within the party.
State PDP Secretary, Gesiye Isowo, also hailed Diri’s achievements, noting that his performance has made future election campaigns easier, given the many completed projects.
Rep. Mitema Obordor, the deputy governor and representative for the Ogbia Federal Constituency, was present.
Former deputy governors Werinipre Seibarugu and Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (retd) were also in attendance, as was Prof. Felix Omemu, the PDP South-South Zonal Secretary.
The gathering was also attended by chairmen of local governments and other important party stakeholders.
