Olutoke Abraham, a resident doctor at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, has criticised the notion that prostate cancer is caused by infrequent sexual activity.
In addition to stating that smoking and obesity, among other factors, have been connected to an elevated risk of prostate cancer, Abraham explained that African males 50 years of age and older are particularly vulnerable to this malignancy.
He gave a speech at the Rotary Club’s medical outreach program for traders at Abeokuta’s Tarmac Phone Village.
Prostate cancer is now the most common disease among Nigerian males, accounting for 11% of all male cancers, according to study, which is why routine examinations are necessary to allow for early identification.
He said, “There is this general myth that reduced sexual activity or increased sexual activity is a contributor to prostate cancer occurring in an individual.
“That is not true, neither of the two will cause prostate cancer in an individual.
“Rather, age, smoking and obesity have been linked to the increased likelihood of having prostate cancer.
“We have quite a number of men living with this cancer; the risk factor says men above the age of 50 years of African ancestry, and that is what we have here in Nigeria.”
The community medicine resident doctor urged middle-aged men to develop the practice of routinely going to the hospital for checkups, pointing out that males are less likely than women to use hospitals.
“Studies have shown that women readily have better health-seeking behaviour than men.
“Men, because of so many reasons, forget to take care of themselves at the expense of taking care of other people and trying to make money to care for their family and loved ones.
“Yes, there is a reduced patronage of hospitals by men compared to women, so men should take care of themselves,” he added.
He advised middle-aged men to have their blood pressure, blood sugar, and prostate-specific antigen tested to evaluate how much their prostate has grown and whether it is still in a minimal or malignant form.
Abraham maintained that if caught early, surgery may stop cancer from spreading to the spine, bones, and other organs.
