An Edinburgh church has raised an impressive £10,000 for Blood Cancer UK, bringing the total amount raised by the congregation since 1992 to £284,076. The funds were raised through various events and activities organized by the WATCH committee, a subgroup of Blackhall St. Columba’s church.
Lynn Bunney, a member of the WATCH committee, explained the inspiration behind their efforts. “WATCH stands for Working All Together, Caring, and Helping Through the Cross,” she said. The committee’s work is guided by Deuteronomy 15:10, which encourages generosity and kindness.
The fundraising efforts included a coin collection, a pet calendar sale, a craft coffee morning, and a Christmas fair. The committee was also assisted by members of Drylaw Parish Church.
Mairead Macleod, Scotland fundraising manager for Blood Cancer UK, expressed her gratitude for the donation. “Sadly, every year blood cancer takes 16,000 lives away from us in the UK, making it the country’s third largest cancer killer,” she said.
“Research has helped drastically improve survival outcomes for many different forms of blood cancer, and thanks to fundraisers in Scotland like the WATCH Committee, we’re able to invest in more research, which will help beat blood cancer for good.”
Blood Cancer UK is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to funding research into all blood cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. The charity also provides information and support to those affected by blood cancer.
Last year, the WATCH committee supported HopScotch, an Edinburgh charity providing respite breaks for vulnerable children. Other beneficiaries have included Richmond’s Hope, a children’s bereavement charity, and Fresh Start, an organization helping people who have been homeless.
Rev. Fergus Cook, minister of Blackhall St. Columba’s, praised the WATCH committee’s efforts. “The WATCH Committee does an absolutely fantastic job of organizing a number of events and activities that raise funds for their chosen charity each year,” he said.
“Both the commitment of the committee and the enthusiasm and generosity of the congregation never cease to amaze me when it comes to expressing God’s love for others through practical means that benefit the wider community.
