EDO 2024: What Obaseki discussed with Wike ahead of Feb 22 election emerge

Gov. of Edo State Godwin Obaseki met with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to solicit support for Asue Ighodalo’s bid for governor.

Governor of Edo State Godwin Obaseki met with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike Tuesday night in Abuja to solicit his endorsement of Asue Ighodalo’s candidature for governor.

Ighodalo is running for Edo state governor on the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) ticket in the primary election scheduled for February 22, 2024.

The governor of Adamawa state, Ahmadu Fintiri, attended the meeting with Obaseki at the Wells Carlton Hotel in Abuja.

Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, a former member of the House of Representatives and Dan Orbih’s preferred candidate in Edo state was a fierce opponent of Obaseki’s peace initiatives.

The current deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, is another contender.

Ighodalo has stated that he is confident in getting the party’s ticket, but Obaseki’s team sees it as a delicate game going into the primary against Ogbeide-Ihama and Shaibu.

It was reported that Obaseki apologised for their misunderstanding and asked for “reconciliation” at their meeting with Wike.

Obaseki’s pact stipulated that Ighodalo would be willing to choose Ogbeide-Ihama as his running mate.

According to reports, Wike explicitly told him that he would not do business with him because he has a track record of breaking promises made to people who have helped him in the past.

According to individuals who spoke with TheCable, the former governor of Rivers State requested a “level playing field so that most acceptable candidate can win.”
