On Monday, Egypt presented a new proposal aimed at restoring the Gaza ceasefire agreement, as Palestinian health officials reported that Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 65 people in the region over the past 24 hours.

The truce, which was reached last week, followed a rise in violence after Israel resumed air and ground operations against Hamas last Tuesday, effectively ending a two-month period of relative calm.

Health officials stated that Israel has killed nearly 700 Palestinians since resuming its attacks, including at least 400 women and children. Hamas, the Islamist militant group, also claimed that several of its senior political and security officials had been killed.

The Egyptian plan proposes that Hamas release five Israeli hostages each week, with Israel beginning the second phase of the ceasefire after the first week, according to two security sources.

Hamas is reportedly still holding 59 hostages, with 24 believed to be alive.

Sources indicated that the Egyptian proposal also includes a timeline for Israel’s full withdrawal from Gaza, with U.S. guarantees, in exchange for the hostages’ release.

Hamas accused Israel of violating the terms of the January ceasefire agreement but expressed a willingness to negotiate a truce and was reviewing proposals from U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff.

Israel stated that it resumed military operations to pressure Hamas into releasing the remaining hostages, emphasizing that it strives to minimize civilian casualties and has questioned the death toll reported by health authorities in Gaza.

Palestinian officials on Sunday reported that the death toll from nearly 18 months of conflict has surpassed 50,000.

According to Israeli sources, the offensive was launched in response to a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and resulted in the capture of more than 250 hostages.
