Muslims across Kaduna State’s 23 local government areas gathered at mosques on Friday to observe special prayers, officially marking the beginning of the Eid-el-Kabir festivities.

Major roads in the capital city including Ahmadu Bello Way, College Road, and Stadium Roundabout appeared nearly empty, with most shops and commercial establishments shut for the holiday.

Interestingly, even street beggars relocated from their usual spots to mosque entrances, hoping for generous donations from wealthy congregants leaving the prayer grounds.

Joy and unity were evident as worshippers greeted each other warmly, expressing love, compassion, and festive cheer.

Security personnel were visibly present at key prayer locations, maintaining order and safeguarding the celebrations from potential disruptions. Despite the caution, the atmosphere remained upbeat, with many attendees thankful for the opportunity to celebrate once again.

A motorcycle repairman, Mallam Muhammadu Abdullah, shared his gratitude, saying: “Although I have had no business since the beginning of this month, seeing today is a great privilege and opportunity I will never take for granted as I continue to worship my God always.”

Hajiya Sadautu Lukeman, who became a widow last year, also expressed thanks for making it to another Eid.

According to her, “I lost my husband, our breadwinner. Since then, my children have been out of school because there’s no one to pay their school fees, as I have nothing doing. Although I have nothing to celebrate, good health is a great privilege.”

Salisu Adamu, a beggar stationed outside a mosque, expressed overwhelming joy due to the kindness shown by worshippers.

“How I wish Sallah continues for a month. I have realized over N10,000 within one hour, unlike ordinary days when I cannot make up to N1,000. People are giving alms cheerfully,” he said.

Children could be seen going from house to house with food and drinks, celebrating with family and friends. Yet for many in Kaduna, the most cherished part of the day was the calm, secure environment, free of unrest or violence.
