Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has commenced the distribution of free prepaid meters to Band A customers within its franchise area as part of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) scheme. This initiative aims to bridge the metering gap in Nigeria, providing meters to Band A customers at no cost.
According to Babatunde Lasaki, EKEDC’s General Manager of Corporate Communications, “In its continuous effort to bridge the metering gap, Eko Electricity Distribution Company has commenced the distribution of free prepaid meters to Band A customers within its franchise area under the Meter Acquisition Fund scheme.”.
The exercise, which will be carried out within the next 60 days, involves replacing obsolete meters at no cost to Band A customers, while unmetered customers will be metered free of charge. The MAF scheme is an initiative of the Federal Government under the Presidential Metering Initiative, monitored by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Lasaki emphasised the company’s readiness to meter eligible customers within the 60-day timeline, saying, “We encourage all our Band A customers with obsolete and faulty meters to proceed to our website to apply for a replacement at no cost. If you are a postpaid customer under any of our Band A feeders, please apply, and we will meter you immediately.”.
He also clarified that the MAF scheme runs simultaneously with the Meter Asset Provider scheme, allowing customers to purchase meters and receive refunds over time. However, the MAF scheme is specifically designed to address metering challenges for Band A customers, with future tranches extending to other customers.
Lasaki commended the Federal Government’s interventions in bridging the metering gap and improving the power sector’s performance.
“The Federal Government’s intervention in the power sector, particularly in the area of metering, is a welcome development. We commend their efforts and are committed to supporting the initiative,” he said.
The EKEDC General Manager also emphasised the importance of metering in ensuring accurate billing and reducing energy theft. “Metering is a critical component of the power sector, and we are committed to ensuring that our customers are accurately billed for their energy consumption,” he explained.
With the commencement of the free prepaid meter distribution, EKEDC is poised to bridge the metering gap and improve customer satisfaction. As Lasaki noted, “We are committed to providing our customers with world-class service, and the distribution of free prepaid meters is a significant step in that direction.”
The Meter Acquisition Fund scheme is expected to have a positive impact on the power sector, and EKEDC’s participation is a testament to the company’s commitment to improving the lives of its customers. As the distribution of free prepaid meters continues, customers can expect improved service delivery and a reduction in estimated billing.
