The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leadership has denied allegations made by Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, that the federal government is responsible for the party’s internal strife.

The party made it clear that neither the suspension of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf nor the expulsion of its 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were related to the government.

In a statement released in Abeokuta, Oginni Sunday, the National Secretary of the NNPP, called El-Rufai’s allegations “the cry of a drowning man” and rejected them as unfounded.

El-Rufai, who recently left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), said that the ruling APC was causing problems inside opposition groups, such as the NNPP. This answer follows his accusations.

Oginni contested El-Rufai’s claims, raising doubts about whether Kwankwaso’s original application to join the NNPP, his purported misappropriation of party finances, or his nonattendance before the party’s disciplinary committee were all the fault of the federal government.

In addition, he charged Kwankwaso with illegally altering the party’s logo, stealing campaign funds, and taking over the convention.

El-Rufai has been given 48 hours by the NNPP to publicly apologize for his comments or risk defamation lawsuits.
