Election interference: US imposes sanctions on entities in Iran, Russia

Because of alleged intentions to meddle in the 2024 U.S. election, the United States has sanctioned organisations in Russia and Iran.

According to a statement released by the U.S. Treasury Department on Tuesday, the entities, which include an organisation connected to Russia’s military intelligence agency, GRU, and a subsidiary of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC, were created with the intention of inflaming sociopolitical tensions and influencing the American electorate in the 2024 election.

The statement claimed that through targeted disinformation campaigns, the governments of Russia and Iran attacked election procedures and organisations in an effort to split the American people.

“The United States will remain vigilant against adversaries who would undermine our democracy,” the statement said.

Russia has not and does not meddle in the internal affairs of other nations, including the United States, according to a statement released by the Russian embassy in Washington.

“As President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stressed, we respect the will of the American people.

“All insinuations about ‘Russian machinations’ are malicious slander, invented for use in the internal political struggles in the United States,” the spokesperson added.

The accusation has not yet received a response from Iran’s delegation to the UN in New York.
