The Conference of Registered Voters in Nigeria (CRVN) has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of a 15 percent import tariff on petrol and diesel, describing it as a progressive policy that will reshape the nation’s oil industry, safeguard local investments, and promote energy self-reliance.
In a statement released on Saturday, the group’s National President, Dr. Ebikeme Edesiri, applauded Tinubu’s decisive and visionary stance on economic transformation, noting that the new measure reflects foresight and a sincere effort to strengthen Nigeria’s domestic economy.
According to Edesiri, the import duty is not intended to punish but to protect—ensuring fair competition for local refineries, preserving jobs, and boosting investor trust.
“This policy is a win-win for government, industry, and the people. By curbing the influx of cheap imported fuel, we will be protecting the huge investments made in domestic refining. It is a practical step toward energy independence and national pride,” the statement reads.
The CRVN explained that the decision is expected to attract additional investors into the petroleum sector, generate employment, stabilize the naira, and increase government earnings for national development.
Dr. Edesiri added that the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s broader economic reform strategy, which encompasses the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange rate unification, and diversification of non-oil revenue streams—all aimed at ensuring long-term growth and stability.
“Each of these reforms reflects a consistent and visionary economic direction. President Tinubu is not playing politics with policy; he is making tough but necessary decisions that will secure Nigeria’s economic future,” Edesiri stated.
The group called on the federal government to maintain transparency in the use of funds derived from the import duty, urging that the revenue be directed toward vital infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and healthcare.
CRVN also appealed to citizens to remain patient and supportive of the government’s reforms, stressing that achieving national self-sufficiency is a gradual process.
“What we are witnessing is a deliberate rebuilding of our economy from within. It requires the cooperation of every Nigerian,” the group admonished.
Edesiri concluded by describing the import duty as an act of national renewal, reaffirming CRVN’s confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership and his vision of economic independence.
“This 15 percent import duty will protect Nigerian refineries, stimulate growth, and secure jobs. We stand solidly behind the President and his reform agenda that brings development closer to the common man,” he added.
