Key members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State have issued a strong warning that they may take to the streets in Abuja if internal efforts to block Governor Peter Mbah’s entry into the party persist.
This threat was made over the weekend during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Enugu, where party members expressed frustration over alleged resistance from some national figures within the APC.
They particularly accused the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, of actively opposing Mbah’s defection and advised him to focus on his federal responsibilities rather than local political maneuvering.
Attendees at the meeting included former APC State Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye; retired Ambassador to Ukraine, Gen. Christian Ugwu; ex-Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University, Prof. Hilary Edoga; former governorship candidate, Chief Gab Nnamani; along with Chief Anike Nwoga, Hyacinth Ngwu, and Mrs. Juliet Egbo.
Dr. Nwoye emphasized that bringing Governor Mbah into the APC would dramatically improve the party’s electoral prospects in Enugu, citing the governor’s growing popularity based on his achievements.
“Our plan is to reverse APC’s abysmal performance in Enugu. The rumours are everywhere that Mbah should move to APC because he has performed. Those putting a wedge to stop him don’t want APC to win in Enugu, but we won’t allow that,” Nwoye said.
He also pointed out that Mbah’s accomplishments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security had drawn praise from President Bola Tinubu, despite Mbah’s current affiliation with another political party.
Chief Anike Nwoga issued a stern warning, stating that if attempts to derail Mbah’s possible defection continued, stakeholders would organize a protest at the Presidential Villa and call for Chief Nnaji’s dismissal.
“APC hasn’t won any major seat in Enugu before. If Peter comes over, the party will begin to win. Some of them want APC to lose in 2027 so they can sit tight in their Abuja appointments,” he alleged.
Professor Hilary Edoga argued that rejecting Mbah would amount to the APC undermining its own potential in Enugu. He encouraged the party to follow the example of other states, such as Akwa Ibom and Delta, where governors are permitted to assume leadership roles within the party structure.
Gen. Christian Ugwu threw his support behind the governor’s rumored defection, insisting that the APC should prioritize ability and leadership over internal power struggles.
“We have a more competent man in Mbah. That’s why I’m joining those calling him to come to APC. We’ve already prepared grounds for him,” he stated.
Mrs. Juliet Egbo also backed the move, arguing that Mbah’s switch to the APC would help Enugu access more federal support, much like Imo and Ebonyi states currently enjoy.
The gathering concluded with a unified appeal to the APC’s national leadership to welcome Governor Mbah into the party, warning that any attempts to block him would trigger widespread demonstrations, particularly from stakeholders in Enugu East.
