Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted that his defensive substitutions in the final moments of Thursday’s match against Tottenham Hotspur may have put his side’s 1-0 lead in jeopardy.
Maresca made the changes only to realize that 12 minutes had been added to the game.
“We created enough chances in the first half, and then, to be honest, it was my mistake because I made the change before seeing the extra time,” Maresca told reporters.
“When I saw 12 minutes, I realized it was probably too early to make that kind of change. But fortunately, we won the game, and we are happy.”
As the clock wound down, Maresca substituted Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez for defender Tosin Adarabioyo and midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
This move allowed Spurs to intensify their attacks in search of an equalizer during the long stoppage time.
