Ruud Gullit, a former Chelsea star, is concerned that Liam Rosenior has begun to make mistakes that upset one of his players.
He stated that it was the manager’s mistake that played a role in the team’s defeat against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semifinal on Wednesday.
After a 3-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge two weeks earlier in the first match, the Blues were unable to regain their footing in the semi-final against Arsenal.
To try to engineer what could have been a significant upset, Rosenior took a safety-first approach that has elicited criticism and concern.
Opting for a five-man defense might have canceled out the threat of their rivals, but this tactic had drawbacks: Chelsea could not exert constant pressure on one of the most defensive teams in Europe.
Liam Delap, who came to the squad for £30 million over the summer, had a difficult evening as he was positioned on the wing—his usual position is not there—to counter Arsenal’s left-back, Piero Hincapie.
The ex-Ipswich centre forward was hardly involved in attacking play and was taken off after 60 minutes.
“Liam Delap was not satisfied with beginning the game on the right wing against Arsenal,” Gullit told Gambling Insider.
“It’s obvious that Liam Rosenior put him in that position so they could send long balls his way, but he seemed completely out of place. I know it was all tactical, but I don’t think Delap looked happy about it at all“If you get the ball into the box, then Delap will do his best to get on the end of it, but when you’re asking him to drop deeper into midfield or out wide, then it’s a different story.
“It is unfortunate that Delap did not support Joao Pedro more, as the Brazilian player seemed to be alone in attack.
“I feel like that would have helped both players if they had started attacking together.’ I get why Rosenior arranged it that way, but when Chelsea tried to go for it and attack Arsenal, they couldn’t make anything happen and ended up losing the match.”
Next month, Arsenal will compete against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final. In the other semifinal match on Wednesday night, Manchester City defeated Newcastle United.
