The European Union has pledged €1.5 million to support victims of the recent crisis in Yelwata and other internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Benue State and other parts of Nigeria. EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, announced the commitment at a joint press conference with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction in Abuja.

Mignot emphasised the EU’s reliability as a partner, stating, “The European Union is a special partner to Nigeria, and… we want to be a reliable partner, a partner you can count on, a partner that keeps its commitments.” He highlighted the EU’s support for Nigeria’s development and prosperity, including emergency responses

The EU’s support package includes €1.5 million for immediate humanitarian action and €1 million for durable solutions, including livelihoods and housing, to support the reintegration of IDPs. Mignot also stressed the need for domestic resource mobilisation, saying, “It’s difficult to rely on additional support from the international community, which makes domestic mobilisation necessary… to address the needs and avoid shortages.”

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, commended the EU for the donation and expressed optimism about its impact. He said, “We will ensure that we rescue every soul that needs to be saved in Nigeria. This funding will go a long way in saving and rebuilding lives.”

The minister also revealed plans to establish an Anticipatory Response Fund to proactively address humanitarian needs, stating, “We are working toward a permanent funding approach… An Anticipatory Response Fund will help us respond more effectively.” The fund aims to reduce dependence on donor aid and ensure sustainable responses to emergencies
