David Onoja, the former deputy governor of Kogi State, has openly sought forgiveness from Dr. Simon Achuba, the man he succeeded, over longstanding allegations that he was involved in orchestrating Achuba’s removal from office.

The apology took place during a visit to Achuba’s home in Abuja on Friday. Onoja described the encounter as a “sacred moment of reuniting” and an opportunity to address and correct past misconceptions.

Achuba was removed from office in 2019 under controversial circumstances during Yahaya Bello’s administration, and Onoja—who was the Chief of Staff at the time—was appointed as his replacement. Although the court later nullified the impeachment, the ruling came after the administration had completed its term.

Addressing the matter on his verified Facebook page, Onoja said “For long, certain misconceptions have lingered, suggesting I orchestrated his impeachment to take his office. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Today, with humility, I cleared that misinformation before him and sought his forgiveness in any way I may have hurt him, knowingly or unknowingly.”

Currently serving as a Commissioner with the Public Complaints Commission (PCC), Onoja said the visit was focused on healing past wounds and promoting unity. “True leadership is not in holding grudges, but in building bridges, healing wounds, and moving forward with a spirit of love and unity,” he said.

He also commended Achuba for his “large heart, wise counsel, and warm hospitality,” noting that their discussion reaffirmed his belief that collaboration and reconciliation are essential for Kogi State’s development.
