Following the 1967–1970 Nigerian Civil War, the Igbo people showed incredible fortitude by rebuilding their lives in spite of tremendous obstacles.

Chief Tola Adeniyi claimed in an exclusive interview with Edmund Obilo on Thursday, August 7, 2025, that the conflict, which ravaged the Eastern Region, caused many Igbo families to be uprooted and destroyed their houses and means of subsistence.

According to Adeniyi, the Igbo, who are frequently characterized as republicans due to their egalitarian inclinations, had a great regard for their elders and customs.

He dispelled preconceptions that implied differently, highlighting the strong moral character of Igbo females and their respect for their dads by abstaining from actions like smoking and inviting men into their homes.

Adeniyi noted that the Igbo people’s dedication to family values even during difficult times was highlighted by this moral discipline, which contrasted with practices in several Western Nigerian groups at the period.

He said that Igbo communities were reunited with their loved ones in the post-war period, many of whom had been uprooted or subjected to abuse in camps and settlements.

In his words, “I know the Igbos are republicans, but they still respect some people. I mean they respect their grandparents. I don’t buy the stupid talk that an Igbo man will wake his mother up by kicking her in the ass.“

“I lived and went there, I went to the East. I saw that even the Igbo girls couldn’t smoke in their father’s house. I found out that an Igbo woman will not bring a man to sleep with her in her father’s house, and we didn’t know that in the west here. I found serious moral attitude among the Igbo girls.“
