Family Foundation Launches Scholarship to Empower Underrepresented Students

The James Brown Family Foundation has launched a new scholarship to support students pursuing post-secondary education in celebration of what would have been James Brown’s 92nd birthday. The Don’t Be A Dropout Scholarship Fund is designed to provide educational opportunities for students from under-represented communities who demonstrate academic promise, artistic potential, and a commitment to community service.

“Education was always important to our father,” said Dr. Deanna Brown-Thomas, Brown’s daughter and president of the foundation. “He believed deeply in the power of knowledge, discipline, and self-expression. Through this scholarship, we hope to carry on his commitment to uplifting young people and inspiring the next generation of artists and leaders

The scholarship was announced on May 3 and will be awarded annually, with the first round of applications opening on the same day. James Brown, widely known as the Godfather of Soul, left a lasting musical legacy, including classics like “I Got You (I Feel Good)” and “Get on the Good Foot.”

Dr. Yamma Brown, Brown’s daughter and vice president of the foundation, said, “We are not just preserving his music — we are preserving his mission.” She added, “This is about more than honouring the past; it’s about investing in the future.”
