A man who recently moved his family from the United States to Pakistan has admitted to fatally shooting his teenage daughter in what authorities call a “honour killing” after she allegedly refused to stop posting videos on TikTok that he deemed inappropriate, police said on Thursday, January 30.
According to local police commander Babar Baloch, the event occurred on Tuesday, January 20, in Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan.
Initially, the 15-year-old girl’s father claimed that her death was caused by an anonymous gunman. However, after being detained for interrogation, he admitted to the crime, authorities added.
The investigation is still underway, and authorities have arrested the man’s brother-in-law in connection with the death. Both men apparently protested to the girl sharing “objectionable” stuff on TikTok, which has around 54 million users in Pakistan.
Honour killings continue to be a problem in Pakistan, where family sometimes murder women for behaviours seen to go against cultural values, such as using social media or choosing their own marriage partner.
