FCT crushes 3,712 impounded commercial motorcycles

Between January and December 2023, the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, DRTS, in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, claims that its Special Task Team impounded 1,408 automobiles, 3,712 commercial motorcycles, and 1,112 tricycles.

The 3,712 commercial motorcycles that were impounded have been crushed, according to Kalu Emetu, Head of Public Relations and Education for the DRTS. Some of the vehicles were returned to their owners following the payment of penalties and completion of required repairs.

According to him, the agency’s revenue in 2023 exceeded N127.541 million from fines paid by owners of impounded vehicles and tricycles to the government.

Motor vehicles that have been impounded because they are unsafe for use on the road are typically unbundled into junk and given back to their owners, according to Emetu. This keeps the vehicles off the road.

He clarified that the FCT regulations prohibiting the use of commercial motorcycles and unfit vehicles in the city called for the destruction of the motorcycles and vehicles.

The spokesperson went on to say that all motorcycles that were impounded for breaking traffic laws automatically belonged to the government by law.

Between January and March 2023, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had 217 vehicles, 836 commercial motorcycles, and 298 tricycles impounded.

The second quarter of the year under review saw 270 vehicles, 964 motorcycles, and 268 tricycles impounded by the DRTS; from July to September, 482 vehicles, 931 motorcycles, and 353 tricycles were impounded.

425 vehicles, 832 commercial motorcycles, and 186 tricycles were stopped in the area for a variety of infractions during the final quarter of the year, according to DRTS data.
