The peaceable nature of the recent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Councils election has been ascribed by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) to the low voter turnout.
On Monday, Dauda Garuba, the Director of CDD, made this attribution during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’.
Recall that during the weekend, elections for the Area Council in the FCT were held, resulting in victories for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in five Area Councils, while the Gwagwalada Area Council was won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During the exercise, reports indicated that violence was minimal or nonexistent across the FCT.
Reacting, Garuba said, “The recent election was notably peaceful, despite minor issues.
“This tranquility can be attributed to the significantly low voter turnout, which reduced opportunities for conflict.
“This low turnout was evident even in a specific police unit, where only two out of 1168 registered voters had cast their ballots by the time of observation.
“There was a polling unit in Kuje where, out of 1168 registered voters, only 2 people had voted when I got there.
“I saw residents prioritizing their morning activities before eventually arriving to vote later in the day.”
