Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, has opened up about why he turned down the opportunity to leave Old Trafford last summer.

The Portugal international revealed that he had received offers to depart, but instead, he decided to have a conversation with the club’s hierarchy and former manager, Erik ten Hag. Fernandes wanted clarity on his future at the club and asked the board whether he was part of their long-term plans.

He shared that he was reassured by both the club and Ten Hag, who confirmed that he would be an integral part of the team’s rebuild. This reassurance ultimately led him to stay at Manchester United.

Speaking after United’s 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16, Fernandes said, “I sat with the club because I had an offer to leave. We talked about the possibility of me leaving the club or staying.

“I just asked if they still see me as a part of the future of the club or not. I spoke at the time with (Erik) Ten hag also.

“He was very clear with me, the club was very clear with me, that they thought I would be a big part of this rebuild. I thought that we could be successful.”

I thought that we could be successful.”

Fernandes has been a key player for Manchester United this season, and his influential performance in the 4-1 win over Real Sociedad in the second leg of the UEL Round of 16 on March 13 further highlighted his importance. In that match, he scored a hat-trick, helping the Red Devils secure a 5-2 aggregate victory and a place in the UEL quarterfinals.
