The Federal Government College, Kaduna, alumni have awarded over ₦7m in scholarships and cash prizes to outstanding students, marking a significant milestone in the school’s history.
The event, which was the second edition of the revived Annual Speech and Prize-Giving Day, saw the alumni award a full university scholarship and N2.6m in total support to Obi Joseph, the overall best graduating student.
Guest speaker, Major General Abdul Khalifa Ibrahim, emphasised the importance of well-run public schools and mentorship, saying, “Education is the bedrock of leadership. Public schools like this one must not be left behind, and as alumni, we must be the light our younger ones look up to.”
Chairman of the occasion, Senator Saminu Turaki, announced the full university scholarship for Obi Joseph, adding that his classmates would provide over 1,000 laptops for all students in the next academic year.
“We are proud of Obi Dominion and all the awardees today. This is just the beginning,” Turaki said.
The President of the FGC Kaduna Old Students Association, Mr Seyi Gambo, hailed the initiative, saying, “We must stop leaving everything to the government. Our association also sponsored four students and two coaches to represent Nigeria at an international robotics competition in California. That’s the kind of impact we must aim for.”
The school’s principal, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, expressed gratitude to the alumni, saying, “This is a dream come true. With the donation of over 1,000 laptops and the mentorship provided today, FGC Kaduna is being positioned as a model for excellence among public schools in Nigeria.
