FIFA defers decision on Palestinian request to suspend Israel

FIFA, the body that oversees international football, has postponed ruling on a request from the Palestinians to suspend Israel until its council meeting on Thursday.

FIFA declared that a committee probe would be launched in order to inform its ultimate judgement, rather than rendering a ruling right away.

In a statement, FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated, “The FIFA Council has implemented due diligence on this very sensitive matter and, based on a thorough assessment, we have followed the advice of the independent experts.”

The Palestinian Football Association had filed a petition with FIFA, asking for Israel to be suspended due to restrictions placed in Israeli-controlled regions and infractions pertaining to the treatment of Palestinian athletes.
